The arrest of the 47-year-old woman and her boyfriend, aged 52, on Thursday by members of the city’s archaeological police was reported by the Italian news agency ANSA, which said their faces and names had been made public in a gazette.
Video footage showed the couple entering the landmark, a Roman amphitheatre built to shelter soldiers under siege from gladiators, through a sliding door of a tunnel with other tourists.
The couple fled the site after being confronted by officers.
A police statement said they had been arrested “after carrying out various types of disruptions on the premises of the Colosseum since December 15”.
It added that after one member of the group had stopped drinking beer, a video had showed a man pouring a bottle of beer on to the ground where tourists were drinking.
“Later a second bottle, filled with beer, was poured over the feet of the tourists,” the statement said.
