Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who recently left the White House’s cybersecurity task force, said Tuesday that politicians and industry leaders need to step up to prevent a “cyber Dark Age.”

Discussing his new book “The Facebook Effect,” he cited the internet’s historical role as a tool for sharing news, information and connecting people in a space that is never too hard to reach.

“Now we are in a new century where the internet is what brings people together,” he said in a Facebook Live broadcast. “We cannot let this become a dark age of censored and censored and online or offline propaganda.”

Zuckerberg first spoke about the threat of online disinformation to Facebook’s 2018 annual security report

“This report is more timely than ever,” he said. “We must think differently about all of the work that we have to do to counteract and prevent the use of propaganda and misinformation to influence and mislead people.”

During his testimony at the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017, Zuckerberg cited Facebook’s “abuse detection system,” as an example of how it could be used to guard against disinformation.

Still, after the elections in 2016, the company announced that it would begin using artificial intelligence and human analysts to sift through millions of posts to “prevent problematic content.”

“We’ve been working hard to be a better platform for dialogue, even as we’ve gone against the grain in other areas of what is permitted on our platform,” he said.

U.S. officials, Facebook and other major technology companies have reportedly been exploring ways to better protect against and remove terrorist content and criminal activity on the internet.
